Perrysburg Officers Recognized for Saving Lives

November 22, 2023

Five Perrysburg Police Officers have been recognized by City Council for their role in saving the lives of two people.

On August 30, 2023, Officer Celina Mason responded to the Bob Evans Restaurant on Fremont Pike due to a report of a choking female. The 911 caller advised that the woman was turning blue. When she arrived, Officer Mason found the woman lying on her back, and was unable to respond to her questions. Instead, she was pointing to her throat saying she could not breathe. Officer Mason performed the Heimlich maneuver until the food was dislodged from her throat. The woman began breathing and speaking normally and was evaluated by the Perrysburg Fire Division.

“I would like to commend Officer Mason for her life saving efforts,” said Deputy Police Chief Chris Sargent. “Her quick response, recognition of the severity of the situation, and her immediate actions are a testament to her training, and to her dedication for those living in and visiting our city.”

On October 20, 2023, Officers Forrest Braddock, Marc Tupper, Devin Longeway, and Konnor Owens responded to a call of a man who was not breathing. When they arrived, they found the man lying on the floor and immediately began rotating CPR, even after paramedics from the Perrysburg Fire Division arrived so that they had time to prepare their equipment. Eventually, the man regained a pulse and spontaneous breathing. After a joint effort with both officers and paramedics to get the man into the ambulance, he was taken to the hospital for further treatment.

“Their quick response time, scene assessment, and immediate actions on this call were not only a testament to their training, but also to their abilities to work together as a team during a stressful situation,” said Sargent.

All five officers received Life Saving Awards on behalf of Police Chief Patrick Jones and Mayor Tom Mackin.

"Their commitment to the safety and well-being of the people of Perrysburg serves as a shining example of what it means to be a true public servant," said Chief Jones. "I commend them for their actions and exceptional service."
