Halloween Safety Tips from Perrysburg Police & Fire Divisions
Trick-or-Treating in the City of Perrysburg will take place on Tuesday, October 31, 2023 from 6-8 p.m. There is no rain date for Trick-or-Treat and this event will occur on this date regardless of the weather conditions.
The Perrysburg Police Division will be working to increase the safety of trick-or-treaters and will assign bike patrol officers to patrol the neighborhoods. The Police Division offers the following safety tips:
- WATCH OUT FOR VEHICLES & PEDESTRIANS: There will be a significant increase in pedestrian traffic and motorist traffic during the trick or treat hours. Everyone involved in trick-or-treat should take extra care to watch for vehicles, be very careful when crossing streets, and obey traffic safety rules to prevent a vehicle/pedestrian accident.
- Drivers should take extra time to actively look for kids at intersections, on medians, curbs and crosswalks.
- Enter and exit driveways and alleys slowly and carefully.
- Reduce any distractions inside your car so you can concentrate on the road and pedestrians.
- Be sure to remind your kids to cross the streets at corners, using traffic signals and crosswalks.
- Walk on sidewalks or paths; if there are no sidewalks, walk facing traffic as far to the left as possible.
- Look left, right and left again when crossing; always walk, don't run when crossing streets.
- ENHANCE VISIBILITY: To enhance visibility, select costumes that contain bright colors or decorate costumes with reflective tape or stickers. Make sure that the costumes fit well to prevent trips or falls.
- Have children carry glow sticks or flashlights to help them see and be seen by drivers.
- Masks may obstruct a child's vision; consider non-toxic face paint or makeup whenever possible.
- ADULT SUPERVISION: Children under the age of 12 should be accompanied by an adult while trick-or-treating.
- If children are mature enough to be out without adult supervision, instruct them to stay in areas familiar to them that are well lit and to trick-or-treat in groups.
- Instruct your children not to enter the home of a stranger unless accompanied by a parent.
- Inspect the treats given to children to make sure that the treats have not been tampered with and are safe for children to eat.
- Report any offensive behavior, bullying, threatening, or theft of treats to the police immediately by calling 419-872-8001.
The Perrysburg Police and Fire Divisions hope that these safety tips will help keep all trick-or-treaters safe and make this a fun event for everyone!
