Pet Waste
Proper disposal of pet waste at home
There are two safe disposal options for pet waste at home.
- You may flush the pet waste down the toilet where it will go to the waste water treatment plant. Do not flush dirty kitty litter down the toilet as it will clog your drains.
- If this is not feasible, your bagged pet waste and used kitty litter may be placed with your trash for collection.
For the health and safety of our collection crews, all pet waste and dirty pet litter must be placed in a tightly sealed heavy plastic bag or sealed plastic container. Do not use a cardboard box or paper bag because the moisture will cause the bag to fall apart.
Pet waste is not a good soil amendment. Do not place pet waste in a compost bin or directly in your garden.
Pooper-Scoopers at all the parks
By city ordinance 618.18(a) pet owners are required to carry materials to clean up pet waste and safely dispose of pet waste. While in the city parks, utilize the pet pooper scoopers provided. Dispensers are located adjacent to trash containers at various locations including parking lots and walking trails. Please refrain from taking extras for use at home. You can use either a plastic grocery bag or Ziploc bag at home.
Pet waste should be kept off streets and curbs. When pet waste flows down the street and into the curb, it goes directly to the Maumee River watershed. All this water flows into the street and then into the storm drain. This water does not go to the waste water treatment plant but flows directly into the Maumee River, our water source. This untreated pet waste is a non point source of pollution.
