Paint Management

When Purchasing and Storage

  • When purchasing paint, only buy what you need and use all that you buy.
  • Store paint in the tightly sealed original container in a location that does not have temperature fluctuations.
  • Keep all paints and painting supplies stored out of the reach of children and pets.
  • Seal lids tightly and keep labels readable.

When Disposal is Necessary

  • Do not place paint that is still in liquid form out for refuse collection because it spills out of the garbage truck on to the street.
  • If the can is no more than half full, remove the lid, set the paint can out in a well ventilated area away from children and pets.
  • Add kitty litter to speed drying.
  • After paint is dried, set out for regular garbage collection.
  • You may also paint a piece of cardboard with the unwanted paint. Both the painted cardboard and the empty paint can may be placed in the regular garbage collection.
  • DO NOT paint excess paint on a board because the board cannot be placed in regular garbage collection.
  • Clean your latex paint brushes and paint trays in a sink, so the waste water goes to the sewage treatment plant.
  • Do not pour paint or rinse paint brushes in the lawn, driveway or storm sewer. This is a source of non-point pollution and will pollute our water source.
