Grassy Creek is one of the main tributaries of the Maumee River Watershed. It is the direct responsibility of landowners to keep the creek clean and free flowing. Maintaining creeks and removal of dead trees on private property is each individual homeowner's responsibility. It is not part of city services. All property owners that live in the Grassy Creek watershed, which includes all Perrysburg residents, have a line item on their tax duplicate for Grassy Creek. This money does not come to the City to pay for annual cleaning of creeks. This money is used for maintenance of the Diversion Channel that diverts most of Grassy Creek around the city.
The Wood County Commissioners had planned a clear cutting of the banks and dredging of Grassy Creek in 1991 as a means of cleaning and maintaining Grassy Creek. Perrysburg residents opposed this proposal. Instead, creek property owners made the commitment to a yearly cleanup of their creek property.
It is the responsibility of individual owners to clean their section of the creek. The city crews will haul away any creek debris that is brought to the curb. The best time for this curbside collection is during the annual spring brush collection. It has been the policy for city crews to pickup creek debris that is placed curbside throughout the year, provided the Street Division is notified prior to the cleanup. Prior notification is necessary.
Grassy Creek Maintenance
Creek maintenance is an ongoing project. To make this process easier, homeowners should follow these guidelines:
- Cut down and remove all dead trees and bushes on the creek side. These items will fall and roll down into the creek and cause blockages.
- Do not make piles of leaves, branches, firewood or other items on the creek side as they will roll down the side and also cause blockages.
- Discourage children from building bridges over or through the creek as this causes backups and flooding.
- The creek side is not the place to make compost bins, firewood piles or brush piles. This is in violation of city ordinance 1086.02
