Disposal of Residential Cooking Oil
Disposing of used cooking oil is an envrinmentally important issue. Used cooking oil should never been poured down the sink drain or toilet. Grease can thicken and clog the pipes. Oil poured down the drain can pollute the water and affect wildlife and the environment.
Reuse and Recycle Cooking Oil
- Allow the cooking oil to cool completely before handling.
- Decide whether the oil can be reused.
- Oil used for deep frying such as peanut oil, can usually be reused several times.
- Strain the oil and store it in an airtight container for future use.
Disposal of Cooking Oil when no longer usable
- Allow the cooking oil to completely cool.
- Do not place liquid oil in the refuse because it will leak out of the garbage truck on to the street. Dispose of used cooking oil in regular refuse collection after placing it in a tighly sealed container.
- To solidify the oil, you can add kitty litter to the oil to absorb it.
After the oil is absorbed by the kitty litter, then place the used oil in a tightly sealed container for regular refuse collection.
