EARTH DAY TOPICS

Activities and presentations are available through the Office of Litter Prevention & Recycling

KINDERGARTEN

  • The Tiny Seed by Eric Carle
    Planting egg carton grass seed pots


FIRST GRADE

  • Earth Day Book by Linda Lowry
    How the Spider Stopped the Litterbugs
    Discussion about NOT littering 

    SECOND GRADE
  • View the Disney video, In The Bag
    Discuss what is litter and litter prevention
    Distribution of car litter bags to students


THIRD GRADE

  • Wartville Wizard by Dan Madden
    Hands on project about littering

FOURTH GRADE

  • Discussion about water pollution and water filtration
    A hands on project about water filtration


FIFTH GRADE

  • Discussion on reducing the use of natural resources by reducing excessive packaging
    Hands on activity about better packaging of school lunches and groceries
    Challenge the class to organize a Garbage Free Lunch Day at their school


SIXTH GRADE

    Discuss marine pollution

OTHER EARTH DAY ACTIVITIES FOR SCHOOLS

PHYSICAL EDUCATION

  • Organize a Walk to School Day
    Conduct a walking route survey
    Design walking route maps for neighborhood
    Form a walking club


ENGLISH

  • Compose and read poems and stories about:
    Preserving the earth's resources
    Promoting recycling
    Design a campaign to start/improve the school's recycling efforts
     
    Conduct a book swap


ART

  • Construct a school wide mural with helping hands pledges by students and staff
    Decorate grocery bags with an Earth Day message to be used at grocery stores
    Create art work by reusing castoff art materials or other items


MATH

  • Utilize discarded containers for math manipulative such as: Orange juice can lids for math facts, different colored lid for making sequences and patterns


LUNCH ROOM

  • Sponsor a No Garbage Lunch Day
    Conduct a garbage audit to compare trash generated on different days and devise a plan to reduce the amount of garbage at lunch time
    .


SCIENCE

  • Explore alternative energy sources
    Perform energy audits in the classrooms
     

 

 America Recycles Day November 15

 These are presentations for school visits.

KINDERGARTEN

  • A Pig's Story by Olivia Newton-John
    This 20 minute story is about a pig who is the ultimate recycler


FIRST GRADE

  • Introduction to worm farming (vermicomposting)
    Construction of a classroom worm bin with an ongoing commitment to feed the worms and harvest the soil. This is hands on activity takes about 45 minutes


SECOND GRADE

  • Discussion about the Great Recycling Adventure
    We discover items in the classroom that we can and do recycle
    This project calls for critical thinking and decision making

THIRD GRADE

  • A hands on project about paper recycling
    This 45 minute presentation includes papermaking and is messy but fun


FOURTH GRADE

  • Discover the wonders of rotting and compost
    The hands on project includes construction of 2-liter pop bottle compost bins.This project takes about 45 minutes and requires students to collect garbage for the compost bin


FIFTH GRADE

  • Discover the world of plastics. Make slime from Elmer's Glue and sun catchers from #6 plastics
    This hands on project talks about physical and chemical changes


SIXTH GRADE

  • Small groups of students are given the challenge to construct a materials
    recovery facility (MRF) for recyclables. The group project calls for critical thinking and group cooperation
    .
